What does bleeding after sex feel like with cervical polyps?

A cervical polyp is a small, usually non-cancerous growth on the cervix. Because it can be delicate and easily irritated, contact during sex may cause spotting noticed on toilet tissue, underwear, or a partner. The bleeding can stop quickly, although it may recur after another episode of penetration. Some people notice pelvic pressure, discharge, or no other sensation at all. Bleeding after sex can also have other causes, including infection, dryness, or changes on the cervix, so the feeling alone cannot identify its source.

Arrange a medical appointment if the bleeding is new, repeated, or unexplained. A clinician may ask when it happens, examine the vagina and cervix, and suggest testing for infection or cervical cell changes. Do not try to remove a suspected polyp yourself. Until you are assessed, note the timing, amount, colour, pain, discharge, and whether bleeding follows every episode of sex.
