What Does a Biopsy Treat?

Short answer
A biopsy does not treat cancer; it removes or samples tissue so specialists can identify disease and plan treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a biopsy is for
During a biopsy, a clinician takes cells or a small piece of tissue from an area that needs explanation. A laboratory examines the sample for features such as inflammation, infection, abnormal cells, or cancer. The method depends on the body site and may use a needle, a small procedure, or tissue removed during another operation.
Results can help distinguish a lung nodule, oral change, or raised PSA-related concern from other causes. Additional testing, such as immunohistochemistry or genomic tumour profiling, may further describe the cells and help the team select treatment.
Before and after sampling
Before the procedure, tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy, and previous reactions to anaesthetic. Ask whether you need to avoid food or drink. Afterward, follow wound-care instructions and keep the result appointment, because a pathology report is interpreted alongside scans and examination findings.
A liquid biopsy uses a blood sample and is different from tissue sampling; your clinician can explain which approach answers your question.
When to seek care
Contact the procedure team for bleeding that does not settle with their advised pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, worsening pain, discharge, or fever. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden deterioration after a biopsy.
Questions for your doctor
Why is this sample needed? Which area will be sampled, and how will discomfort be managed? When will the pathology result be available? Could more laboratory testing be needed, and how will the result change my next step?
Questions people ask
Can a biopsy remove the whole problem?
Sometimes a small abnormal area may be removed during sampling, but a biopsy is primarily performed to obtain diagnostic information.
Does a biopsy spread cancer?
The clinical team chooses a suitable technique and route; discuss your individual concerns before the procedure.
