What Does an Armpit Lump Feel Like With Lymphoma?

A lymphoma-related lymph node may feel firm or rubbery and sit beneath the skin in the armpit. It can be painless and may remain noticeable rather than settling like a temporary irritation. Lymph nodes can also enlarge because of infection, inflammation, a skin problem, or another condition, so touch alone cannot identify lymphoma.

A clinician considers the lump alongside its duration, growth, nearby symptoms, examination findings, and tests. A breast, chest-wall, or arm problem can also affect nodes in the armpit.

Arrange a medical appointment for a new, persistent, enlarging, hard, or fixed armpit lump. Note when you first felt it, whether it changes, and whether you have had a recent infection, vaccination, wound, or skin irritation on that side. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, because this can make it sore and harder to judge.

Assessment may include an examination and, when appropriate, imaging or a sample of the node. Ask what the proposed test is intended to clarify.

Seek prompt medical advice if the lump is growing, accompanied by unexplained fever, drenching night sweats, unintentional weight loss, persistent itching, or marked tiredness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening illness.
