What does arm or leg swelling feel like with blood clots in cancer?

The swelling may develop over hours or days and can involve the calf, thigh, arm, or the area around a treatment line. The affected limb may feel heavier than the other side, look red or darker, or feel warmer. Pain can be aching or tender, especially when walking or using the limb, although some clots cause few noticeable symptoms.

Many problems can produce swelling, including infection, injury, or fluid build-up. A clinician may need to examine both limbs and arrange tests. The feeling cannot confirm or exclude a clot by itself.

Contact your cancer or medical team promptly about new, unexplained, or worsening one-sided swelling. Do not massage the limb or begin compression treatment unless a clinician has advised it. Describe when it started, where it is located, whether it is painful or warm, and whether you have recently had surgery, a line, reduced mobility, or cancer treatment.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, severe weakness, or a fast or irregular heartbeat alongside limb swelling. These symptoms can indicate that a clot has affected the lungs. Urgent assessment is also needed if the limb becomes rapidly more swollen, severely painful, cold, or pale.
