What does antifungal treatment for thrush treat?

Thrush happens when Candida, a yeast normally found on the body, grows out of balance. Vaginal thrush commonly causes itching, soreness, irritation and a thick discharge. Nipple thrush can cause burning nipple pain or shiny, sensitive skin, although these symptoms can have other causes.

Treatment may be applied locally, taken by mouth, or chosen for both a breastfeeding parent and baby when nipple thrush is suspected. Clotrimazole and fluconazole are examples of antifungal medicines, but the appropriate option depends on pregnancy, breastfeeding, other medicines and the diagnosis.

Use the treatment for the full period advised and follow directions for creams, pessaries or tablets. Avoid scented washes and products that irritate the area, and keep the skin gently clean and dry. Do not self-treat every episode of itching or discharge, because bacterial infections and sexually transmitted infections can feel similar.

If symptoms return repeatedly, arrange an assessment rather than continuing frequent courses on your own. A clinician may check the diagnosis and look for factors that are making symptoms recur.

Arrange a review if this is your first episode, symptoms do not improve after treatment, or symptoms keep returning. Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic pain, sores, foul-smelling discharge, bleeding unrelated to your period or severe swelling. Check before using oral treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
