What does an antenatal care package treat?

Appointments may include blood pressure checks, urine testing, blood tests, fetal growth assessment and conversations about symptoms, medicines and birth planning. The exact package varies with your stage of pregnancy, medical history and local service.

Screening can identify concerns such as anaemia, diabetes in pregnancy or raised blood pressure. A glucose tolerance test may be offered when appropriate. Supplements such as folic acid, iron or vitamin D are recommended for particular needs, while low-dose aspirin is used only when a clinician advises it. Magnesium sulphate has specific hospital uses and is not a routine self-treatment.

Attend scheduled visits and bring your medication list, previous records and questions. Tell the maternity team about bleeding, pain, reduced fetal movement, severe headache, vision changes, swelling that appears suddenly, fever or fluid leaking from the vagina.

Take prescribed supplements exactly as directed and do not add medicines or herbal products without checking first. Ask which screening tests are planned, when results will be available and who to contact outside appointment hours.

Contact your maternity service promptly for vaginal bleeding, suspected waters breaking, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, a severe headache or changes in vision. Later in pregnancy, reduced or changed fetal movement needs same-day advice rather than waiting for a routine visit.
