What Does Ankle Swelling Feel Like With Ankle Sprain?

A sprain stretches or tears ligaments, commonly after the ankle rolls. Fluid can collect around the injured tissues, with bruising and tenderness on one side of the joint. The ankle may feel unstable, and moving it in the direction of the injury can hurt. A severe sprain and a fracture can feel similar, so inability to walk or strong bone tenderness deserves assessment.

Reduce activities that increase pain, elevate the foot, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short intervals. Gentle movement within comfort can prevent excessive stiffness, but do not force the joint or return to sport while it remains unstable.
