What Does Ankle Swelling Feel Like With Ankle Fracture?

Swelling can build after the injury as blood and fluid collect around damaged bone and nearby soft tissue. The skin may look stretched, and pressing the area can hurt. Bruising, marked tenderness over a bone, difficulty putting weight through the foot, or an ankle that looks misshapen can occur. Feeling alone cannot confirm a fracture; an examination and imaging may be needed.

Protect the ankle and avoid walking on it if weight causes significant pain. Keep the foot raised when resting, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods without placing ice directly on the skin. Do not try to straighten the ankle. A clinician can advise on pain relief, a splint or cast, and safe movement after assessment.

Seek urgent medical assessment after a significant injury, especially if you cannot bear weight, the ankle is visibly deformed, pain is severe, or swelling is rapidly increasing. Get emergency help if toes become blue, pale, cold, numb, or difficult to move, or if a wound exposes bone.
