What does abdominal swelling feel like with neuroblastoma?

The abdomen may look more rounded or feel firm, and a child may say their tummy feels tight, sore, heavy, or full. They may eat less because pressure makes them feel full quickly. Depending on where a growth is located, there may be discomfort in the back or side, constipation, or changes in urination. Younger children may show the problem through irritability, guarding the abdomen, less play, or difficulty explaining the sensation. These signs can occur with many childhood illnesses, so the symptom alone cannot identify neuroblastoma.

Arrange a prompt medical review for new or persistent swelling, especially if it is becoming more noticeable or is paired with poor appetite, vomiting, constipation, pain, tiredness, or weight change. Write down when you first noticed it and whether your child is eating, drinking, passing urine, and opening their bowels normally. Keep meals and fluids manageable, and avoid pressing on the abdomen. A clinician may examine the child and choose tests based on the findings.

Seek urgent care if the child has severe or sudden pain, repeated vomiting, a very tense abdomen, difficulty breathing, fainting, unusual sleepiness, a seizure, inability to pass urine, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and a dry mouth. Fever with a child who looks seriously unwell also needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these changes appear.

Ask what could explain the swelling, whether the abdomen needs imaging, and which changes should lead to emergency care. Ask how to support eating and drinking, how to ease discomfort safely, and who to contact outside clinic hours.
