What does abdominal swelling feel like with liver cirrhosis?

Liver cirrhosis can change how the body handles fluid and blood flow through the liver. Fluid may collect in the abdominal space, making the belly appear enlarged and feel stretched or firm. Waistbands may feel tighter, appetite may fall because of pressure, and lying flat can become uncomfortable. Swelling can vary over time. Other problems, including digestive conditions, can also enlarge the abdomen, so the feeling alone cannot establish the cause.

Contact your liver-care team about new or increasing swelling. Keep a record of changes in abdominal size, discomfort, appetite, breathing, and leg swelling. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and check before using non-prescription pain medicines, supplements, or fluid remedies. Your clinician may review medicines, examine you, arrange tests, or discuss draining fluid when appropriate.

Seek urgent care for fever, new or severe abdominal pain, confusion, unusual sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools, faintness, rapidly worsening swelling, or difficulty breathing. In a person with cirrhosis, these changes can indicate a serious complication.
