What does abdominal pain feel like with pancreatitis?

The discomfort is often deep rather than surface-level. It can sit in the upper middle or upper left abdomen, remain constant, and feel worse when lying flat. Some people find leaning forward makes it easier to tolerate. Nausea, vomiting, fever, a swollen or tender abdomen, and feeling unusually unwell may occur alongside the pain. These features can overlap with other abdominal problems, so the sensation alone cannot confirm the cause.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new, strong, or persistent upper-abdominal pain, especially when vomiting or fever is present. Do not drink alcohol while waiting, and take small sips of fluid if you can keep them down. Avoid taking leftover prescription medicine. Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, trouble breathing, a very swollen abdomen, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down or feel cold, clammy, and weak.
