What does abdominal pain feel like with gallstones?

Gallstone pain often builds to a steady ache or intense pressure rather than brief spasms. It may spread to the back or right shoulder and can follow a heavy or fatty meal. Nausea or vomiting may accompany the pain. The discomfort can last for hours, and a person may find that changing position does not relieve it.

Gallstones can also be present without symptoms. Other conditions can cause similar upper abdominal pain, so the sensation cannot confirm gallstones by itself. A clinician may use an examination and imaging to clarify the cause.

Avoid foods that repeatedly trigger pain, especially rich or greasy meals, and choose smaller portions until you have medical advice. Sip fluids if you feel nauseated. Record where the pain starts, when it follows meals, how long it lasts, and whether vomiting or fever occurs.

Do not rely on leftover prescription medicine or take a new pain medicine without checking that it is suitable for you, particularly if you have liver, kidney, stomach, or pregnancy-related concerns.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, repeated vomiting, faintness, or a swollen abdomen. These features can signal blockage or inflammation affecting the gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas.
