What Does a Sprained Wrist Look Like?

Short answer
A sprained wrist may look swollen, bruised, or slightly puffy around the joint, though some sprains show little visible change.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible appearance
- Swelling, puffiness, bruising, redness, or no obvious change
- What appearance cannot do
- It cannot reliably rule out a fracture
What visible changes can tell you
Swelling may appear soon after a twist or fall and can make the wrist crease or knuckles look less defined. Bruising may spread across the wrist or hand as blood from injured small vessels moves under the skin. Redness and warmth can accompany irritation. A normal-looking wrist does not prove that the ligaments are uninjured, while marked swelling does not by itself prove a fracture. The injury mechanism, tenderness, movement, and hand function all matter.
How to protect it
Remove rings and watches if swelling is developing. Rest the hand, raise it when possible, and use a cloth-covered cold pack for brief periods. Keep the wrist supported without making a bandage tight. [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) can limit painful movement when recommended by a clinician. As symptoms settle, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) may help restore flexibility and grip. [Kinesiology Taping](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/kinesiology-taping/) is not a substitute for assessment after a significant injury.
Changes that need prompt care
Seek urgent medical help if the wrist is at an unusual angle, the hand or fingers become pale, blue, cold, numb, or difficult to move, or pain is severe. Arrange prompt assessment when swelling is substantial after a fall or blow, or when pressing on a particular bone causes strong pain. Persistent swelling, bruising, or loss of function also deserves review because a fracture can resemble a sprain.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern of swelling suggest that I need imaging? How should I support the wrist, and how can I tell whether a bandage is too tight? When should I start movement exercises?

Questions people ask
Can a sprained wrist look normal?
Yes. A mild ligament injury may have little visible swelling or bruising, so function and tenderness still matter.
Is bruising a sign of a broken wrist?
Bruising can occur with either a sprain or fracture; an examination may be needed after a fall or significant impact.
