What causes tinea versicolor?

Short answer
Tinea versicolor is caused by overgrowth of a normal skin yeast, encouraged by heat, sweating, oily skin, and humid conditions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening on the skin
The yeast Malassezia normally lives on many people’s skin without causing trouble. In warm, humid conditions, it can multiply more than usual on areas such as the chest, back, neck, and upper arms. The yeast affects pigment production and may cause flat patches that look lighter, darker, pink, or tan than nearby skin. Fine scale may be easier to notice when the skin is gently scratched.
Tinea versicolor is not a sign of poor hygiene and is not usually spread by ordinary contact. Colour differences may remain after the yeast has been controlled because pigment recovery takes time, especially after sun exposure makes surrounding skin darker.
What to do
A clinician or pharmacist can help confirm the diagnosis, particularly when patches are new or changing. Use the recommended antifungal treatment exactly as directed and cover the affected areas as instructed. Keep skin cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing, choose breathable fabrics, and avoid heavy oily products on the affected region. Do not judge treatment only by colour: the scale and activity of the infection may improve before the skin tone looks even again.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination if patches are spreading, very itchy, inflamed, painful, or not improving with appropriate treatment. Seek advice when the diagnosis is uncertain, the scalp or nails are involved, or the problem repeatedly returns. Prompt care is sensible for a person with reduced immunity or a rash accompanied by fever or marked tenderness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the patches fit tinea versicolor, which treatment is suitable for the body area, when the colour may blend back in, and whether a prevention plan is needed for repeated episodes.

Questions people ask
Is tinea versicolor contagious?
Because the yeast normally lives on skin, tinea versicolor is generally not treated as an infection passed through ordinary contact.
Why are the patches still pale after treatment?
The yeast may be controlled before pigment returns to its usual appearance, so colour change can lag behind treatment.
