What causes sneezing?

Sneezing is a protective reflex: the nose detects an irritant and forcefully moves air out. A common cold often brings sneezing with a blocked or runny nose, cough, or feeling unwell. Allergic rhinitis may cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes, and clear discharge, often after exposure to pollen, house dust mites, or animals. Dry air, strong scents, smoke, and sudden temperature changes can also trigger it without an infection. The pattern, timing, and other symptoms help separate these causes.

Notice whether symptoms follow cleaning, contact with pets, outdoor exposure, perfume, or a particular room. Reduce the trigger where practical, ventilate living spaces, and use tissues or hand hygiene to limit spread if a cold is possible. Saline nasal rinsing may soothe irritation when used safely. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable, particularly if symptoms keep returning or disturb sleep.

Arrange medical advice for persistent sneezing with wheezing, breathlessness, facial pain, fever that does not settle, thick discharge, or symptoms that interfere with sleep and daily activities. Seek emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread hives after an exposure, as these may signal a severe allergic reaction.
