What causes scaly skin?

Scaling happens when outer skin cells build up or shed in visible flakes. Dry weather, hot showers, harsh washing, and low moisture can make ordinary dryness look rough. Ringworm may produce an itchy, scaly border, while Tinea Versicolor can cause fine scaling over discoloured patches. Ichthyosis is an inherited pattern of persistent dryness and scale. Psoriasis may cause thicker, recurring scale over defined plaques. The body site, itch, redness, cracks, and duration help separate these possibilities.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, and a rich fragrance-free moisturiser after washing. Emollient Therapy can soften the surface and reduce water loss. Avoid picking, vigorous scrubbing, and fragranced exfoliants. Keep feet dry and avoid sharing towels if a fungal infection is possible. A clinician may consider Topical Antifungal Treatment for confirmed fungal disease or Narrowband UVB Phototherapy for selected inflammatory conditions; the correct option depends on the diagnosis.

Arrange an examination if scaling is persistent, widespread, painful, cracked, bleeding, or associated with hair loss or nail changes. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, severe tenderness, or skin peeling with mouth or eye sores. New scaling after a medicine or chemical exposure also deserves timely advice.
