What causes skin rash?

A rash describes a visible change rather than one diagnosis. Contact with a new product or fabric may cause Contact Dermatitis, while Atopic Dermatitis often causes dry, itchy, inflamed patches. Ringworm can form an expanding scaly edge, Scabies commonly causes intense itch with small bumps, and Hives create raised areas that may come and go. Psoriasis can produce persistent, thicker plaques. Tinea Versicolor may cause lighter or darker patches, while heat, sweating, or blocked ducts can contribute to Heat Rash.

Pause newly introduced fragranced products, avoid scratching, and use a gentle cleanser with a bland moisturiser. Keep the area cool and dry if heat or sweating seems relevant. Do not share towels, clothing, or bedding when a contagious infection is possible. Photograph changes and record exposures, medicines, itch, pain, and whether the rash spreads. A clinician may recommend a targeted treatment such as Topical Corticosteroids only after considering the cause and body site.

Get urgent help for a rash with breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly developing widespread hives. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever, severe pain, blisters, peeling, purple spots, eye or mouth involvement, or rapidly spreading warmth and swelling. Arrange a routine review if the rash persists, returns often, or disrupts sleep.
