What causes peeling skin?

Short answer
Peeling skin can be caused by dryness, irritation, sunburn, fungal infection, or inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Dryness, irritants, sun exposure, infection, and inflammation
- Helpful first step
- Gentle cleansing followed by fragrance-free moisturiser
What the peeling may mean
Skin sheds its outer cells naturally, but visible flakes or sheets suggest that the surface barrier is irritated or renewing faster than usual. Dry air, frequent washing, hot water, harsh cleansers, and friction can strip protective oils. Peeling after intense sun exposure is a sign of sunburn. Peeling between the toes or on the sole may occur with Athlete's Foot, while sharply defined thick patches can occur with Psoriasis. Irritant Contact Dermatitis may follow contact with soaps, solvents, hair products, or other substances.
What you can do
Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser soon afterward. Do not pull off loose skin, scrub the area, or apply a new active product while the surface is raw. Keep foot skin dry and change damp socks if peeling is between the toes. Note recent sun exposure, new products, medicines, and the location of the peeling; these details help a clinician distinguish irritation from infection or inflammation.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if peeling is widespread, recurrent, painful, very itchy, cracked, or not settling with gentle care. Seek urgent help if it comes with blisters over a large area, skin tenderness, fever, facial or eye involvement, mouth sores, or difficulty breathing. Rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or pus also needs prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, fungal infection, sun damage, or another condition; whether a skin sample or examination is needed; and which moisturiser or treatment is suitable for the affected body area.

Questions people ask
Should I peel off loose skin?
No. Pulling can expose tender skin and increase irritation; let it shed naturally while keeping the area moisturised.
Can peeling skin be a fungal infection?
Yes. Peeling on the feet or in moist skin folds can occur with a fungal infection, especially when itching or cracking is present.
