What causes radiating leg pain?

Nerves leaving the lower spine travel through the buttock and leg. A disc that bulges or herniates can irritate a nerve root. Narrowing around the spinal canal or nerve openings, as in [Spinal Stenosis](/conditions/spinal-stenosis/), can have a similar effect. A vertebra that shifts relative to the one below it, called [Spondylolisthesis](/conditions/spondylolisthesis/), may also reduce space for nerves. [Piriformis Syndrome](/conditions/piriformis-syndrome/) can irritate the sciatic nerve in the buttock.

Pain may feel burning, electric, shooting, or aching and can occur with tingling, numbness, or weakness. [Herniated Disc](/conditions/herniated-disc/) is one possible cause, but the pattern, strength, reflexes, and back examination help distinguish causes.

Keep gently moving within tolerable limits and change position regularly. Avoid lifting or twisting that clearly worsens the pain. Procedures are chosen according to the cause and nerve findings, not pain location alone.

Get urgent medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe symptoms after major trauma. Arrange assessment for persistent pain, progressive numbness, fever, unexplained weight change, or pain that repeatedly disrupts sleep.

Ask which nerve pattern your symptoms follow, whether weakness or reflex changes are present, whether imaging is needed, and which activity changes are safe while the nerve settles.
