What causes prurigo nodularis?

The condition can begin with an itch from dry skin, eczema, an insect bite, nerve irritation or another skin problem. Scratching or rubbing then injures the surface and activates inflammation. Over time, repeated friction can make individual nodules firm, raised and intensely itchy. Atopic dermatitis is commonly associated with prurigo nodularis, but the nodules can also occur without an obvious underlying trigger. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if nodules persist, multiply or interfere with sleep. Keep nails short, use a bland moisturiser regularly, and protect itchy areas from rubbing where practical. A clinician may look for eczema, infection, medication reactions or nerve-related itch and may recommend treatments that calm inflammation and reduce scratching. Do not pick at nodules, because broken skin can become infected.

Seek prompt medical care if a nodule becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen or draining, or if redness spreads. Get urgent help for fever with rapidly worsening skin changes, facial swelling, trouble breathing or marked weakness. These features can point to infection or another problem needing prompt assessment rather than simple itch control.

Ask whether your pattern fits prurigo nodularis, whether eczema or another itch source may be contributing, and which treatments can break the itch-scratch cycle. Mention new medicines, sleep disruption, areas involved and any sores or drainage.
