What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis causes clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, or scaling around the mouth; it can also affect the nose or eyes. Heavy moisturisers, cosmetics, toothpaste ingredients, friction, heat, and hormonal shifts may aggravate sensitive skin. The rash is not simply ordinary acne, and squeezing the bumps can prolong irritation. A narrow band of skin next to the lip may remain less affected.

Review recent face products, steroid use, toothpaste changes, and friction with a clinician. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubs and fragranced products, and keep the routine simple while the rash is active. Do not restart a facial steroid to control a flare without medical guidance; stopping or changing one may need a tailored plan because rebound irritation can occur. Prescription treatment may be needed when the rash persists.
