What causes pancreatitis?

The pancreas makes digestive enzymes and hormones that help control blood sugar. Pancreatitis develops when pancreatic inflammation causes these digestive processes to activate or irritate tissue too early. Gallstones can block the channel where digestive juices leave the pancreas, while alcohol-related disease can injure pancreatic cells over time or trigger sudden inflammation.

Other possible contributors include some medicines, abdominal injury, infections, inherited conditions, and very high levels of blood fats. Sometimes tests do not identify a single cause. Pancreatitis can be sudden or ongoing, and either form needs medical assessment because inflammation can affect digestion and nearby organs.

Upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back, nausea, vomiting, fever, or marked tenderness should be assessed promptly. Clinicians may use blood tests and imaging to look for inflammation, gallstones, or another trigger. Until reviewed, avoid alcohol and do not take leftover medicines for severe abdominal pain. If pancreatitis is diagnosed, treatment focuses on hydration, pain control, nutrition, and addressing the cause.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, especially with repeated vomiting, fever, a swollen abdomen, faintness, yellowing of the skin, confusion, or difficulty breathing. A rapid deterioration or inability to keep fluids down warrants emergency assessment.
