What causes mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer may affect the lips, tongue, gums, inner cheeks, floor of the mouth, or roof of the mouth. Tobacco in smoked or chewed forms and regular heavy alcohol exposure can damage cells over time; using both can increase harmful irritation. Some mouth cancers are linked to human papillomavirus, while others develop without one identifiable cause.

Oral leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis are tissue conditions associated with increased concern and need for professional review. A persistent sore, red or white patch, thickened area, or unexplained lump is not proof of cancer, but it should not be ignored.

Book an examination with a dentist or doctor for a mouth change that does not settle, especially if it bleeds, becomes firm, or interferes with chewing, swallowing, speaking, or opening the jaw. The clinician may inspect the mouth, feel the neck, and arrange a biopsy or imaging if needed.

Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol exposure. Check dentures or other dental appliances for rubbing, but do not assume friction is the explanation if the area persists after adjustment. Keep regular dental appointments and mention any previous oral patches or treatment.

Arrange prompt assessment for a sore, patch, lump, bleeding area, numbness, loose tooth without a clear dental cause, or neck swelling that persists. Seek urgent help if swelling obstructs breathing, swallowing suddenly becomes difficult, or bleeding is heavy and does not stop.

Ask what the mouth change could represent, whether a biopsy is needed, whether tobacco or alcohol support is available, and which symptoms should bring you back sooner.
