What causes itchy skin?

Short answer
Itchy skin can be caused by dryness, irritation, allergy, inflammation, infection, or a condition affecting the skin’s nerve signals.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How causes can look different
Dryness and contact irritation may cause tight, rough, or stinging skin after a new soap, detergent, cosmetic, or fabric exposure. Hives produce raised, shifting welts that can appear and fade. Psoriasis and lichen planus can create persistent inflamed or scaly areas. Scabies often causes marked itch with a pattern involving close contacts. Skin yeast infection may affect warm, moist folds, while prurigo nodularis causes firm itchy nodules that are maintained by scratching.
Itch without an obvious rash can still need assessment, especially when it is widespread, persistent, disrupts sleep, or starts after a new medicine. The location, visible changes, timing, and associated symptoms help narrow the possibilities.
Comfort measures while you assess the cause
Use a plain moisturiser regularly, bathe with lukewarm water, and choose gentle fragrance-free products. Cool compresses and short nails can reduce damage from scratching. Wear breathable clothing and stop any newly introduced product that seems to trigger the itch. Avoid using steroid, antibiotic, antifungal, or antihistamine products repeatedly without advice, because the wrong treatment can mask the pattern or irritate the skin.
A clinician may recommend a targeted treatment such as oral antihistamine therapy or narrowband UVB phototherapy when the diagnosis and severity make it suitable.
When to seek medical care
Book a medical review if itching persists, spreads, causes open sores, or repeatedly interrupts sleep. Seek urgent help for itch with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread blistering. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or a new widespread rash after taking a medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Record when the itch began, where it occurs, what the skin looks like, and any new medicines or products. Ask whether the pattern fits hives, psoriasis, scabies, yeast infection, or another condition, and which treatment is appropriate for the confirmed cause.
