What causes itchy eyes?

Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, redness, and sometimes puffy eyelids. Allergic rhinitis can add sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and symptoms that worsen around pollen, dust, or animals. House dust mites and pet allergens may trigger symptoms indoors. Dry eye can feel gritty, burning, tired, or intermittently blurry, especially with prolonged screen use, air conditioning, or contact lenses. Smoke, cosmetics, chlorinated water, and other irritants can inflame the surface. Itchy eyes alone do not establish a diagnosis.

Do not rub your eyes, because rubbing can increase swelling and surface irritation. Wash your hands, remove contact lenses, and use a cool clean compress. Reduce exposure to a suspected trigger and keep windows or bedding clean when indoor allergens are a concern. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication or lubricating drops are suitable; do not share eye drops or use someone else’s prescription. Arrange an eye assessment if symptoms keep returning.

Get urgent eye care for severe pain, marked light sensitivity, sudden vision change, an injured eye, chemical exposure, or a red eye with contact-lens use. Seek emergency help if eye symptoms occur with facial swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing. Prompt assessment is also sensible for thick discharge, pronounced swelling, or symptoms affecting one eye and worsening.

Ask which triggers fit your pattern, whether the surface is dry or inflamed, and which drops or allergy treatment are safe with your lenses and other medicines.
