What causes hydrosalpinx?

The fallopian tube normally provides a passage between the ovary and uterus. Inflammation can damage its delicate lining, and healing may leave bands of scar tissue that narrow or close the tube. Fluid then collects behind the blockage, stretching the tube; this is called a hydrosalpinx.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a recognised cause, including infection that has affected the upper reproductive organs. Previous pelvic infection, surgery, endometriosis or other inflammation may also leave adhesions. Some people have no symptoms, while others notice pelvic discomfort, unusual discharge or difficulty becoming pregnant.

Book a gynaecology assessment if a scan has suggested hydrosalpinx, you have ongoing pelvic pain, or conception is taking longer than expected. The clinician may review infection history, symptoms and fertility goals, then use imaging or other tests to clarify the tube's appearance and whether another cause is present.

Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics. If pelvic inflammatory disease is suspected, prompt assessment matters because treatment is directed at infection and its complications; existing scar tissue may need a separate discussion. Ask how the finding affects fertility planning and whether a partner also needs infection testing.

Seek urgent care for sudden or severe pelvic pain, fever with pelvic pain, vomiting, fainting, heavy bleeding or feeling acutely unwell. Contact a clinician promptly for new discharge, pain during sex or pain when urinating, particularly after a possible sexually transmitted infection exposure.

Ask whether the tube is blocked on one side or both, what caused the scarring, and which tests can distinguish hydrosalpinx from another pelvic finding. Discuss infection treatment, fertility plans and whether a fertility specialist should be involved.
