What Causes Head and Neck Cancer?

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers affecting sites including the lips, mouth, throat, voice box, nose and nearby areas. The contributing factor can differ by site. Smoking, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products expose tissues to substances that can damage cell DNA. Regular heavy alcohol use can also injure these tissues, and the combination of tobacco and alcohol raises concern more than either exposure alone.

Certain types of human papillomavirus, or HPV, can contribute to cancers in parts of the throat. HPV-related disease may occur in people who have never used tobacco. Other influences can include long-term exposure to wood dust or certain workplace chemicals, previous radiation to the head or neck, and inherited changes that affect how cells repair damage. Having a risk factor does not mean cancer will develop, and some people receive a diagnosis without a clear cause.

Stopping tobacco use is one practical way to reduce ongoing exposure, whether the product is smoked, chewed or used in another form. Limiting alcohol, using protective equipment around workplace dust or chemicals, and attending dental and medical appointments can also support prevention and early assessment. HPV vaccination may help prevent infections linked with some cancers; ask a clinician whether it is suitable for you. These steps cannot explain an existing lump or persistent symptom, so arrange an examination if something has changed.

Arrange a medical or dental assessment for a mouth sore, red or white patch, neck lump, hoarse voice, swallowing difficulty, unexplained bleeding, one-sided blocked nose or ear symptoms that persist or keep returning. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, or rapidly increasing swelling. These symptoms have many possible causes, but an examination can identify whether tests such as a camera examination, scan or biopsy are needed.
