What Causes Difficulty Walking?

Short answer
Difficulty walking can be caused by joint pain, muscle weakness, nerve problems, foot conditions, or balance changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the walking change may mean
Hip or knee osteoarthritis can make each step painful and reduce how far you can walk. Spinal stenosis may cause leg pain, heaviness, or weakness that appears during standing or walking and eases with sitting or bending forward. Plantar fasciitis can make the first steps after rest especially uncomfortable. Sarcopenia, which involves loss of muscle strength and mass, may make stairs, rising from a chair, or uneven ground harder. A limp, shorter steps, foot dragging, numbness, or poor balance gives a clinician useful clues, but one symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do about difficulty walking
Arrange an assessment if the change persists, limits work or daily activities, or keeps returning. Note when it began, whether one or both legs are affected, how far you can walk, and whether pain, tingling, weakness, or dizziness comes first. Until assessed, use supportive footwear, clear trip hazards, and take breaks before your legs become unsteady. A clinician may examine your joints, strength, sensation, walking pattern, and balance before deciding whether imaging, blood tests, physiotherapy, or another treatment is appropriate. If hip damage is advanced, total hip replacement may be discussed, but the choice depends on symptoms, examination findings, and previous care.
When to seek care urgently
Seek emergency care for sudden difficulty walking with facial drooping, trouble speaking, new severe dizziness, or weakness or numbness on one side. Get prompt medical attention after a significant injury, or when you cannot bear weight, have a visibly deformed joint, or develop rapidly worsening weakness. New loss of bladder or bowel control with numbness around the groin needs urgent assessment. These signs can indicate a problem that should not wait for a routine appointment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could my walking pattern suggest a joint, muscle, nerve, or foot problem? What findings would make imaging useful? Which activities should I modify while we investigate this? Would physiotherapy or a walking aid improve safety? What changes should make me seek urgent help?

Questions people ask
Can difficulty walking come from the hip or knee?
Yes. Osteoarthritis in either joint can cause pain and stiffness that changes your stride and reduces walking tolerance.
When is difficulty walking an emergency?
Sudden walking difficulty with one-sided weakness, facial drooping, or speech trouble needs emergency care. Inability to bear weight or rapidly worsening weakness also needs prompt assessment.
