What causes dark underarms?

Shaving, waxing, deodorant ingredients, tight clothing, and skin rubbing can inflame the underarm and leave darker pigment after the irritation settles. Intertrigo can develop where warmth, moisture, and friction meet; redness, soreness, burning, odour, or small surface cracks may accompany it.

A smooth, velvety thickening that also appears on the neck or other folds deserves medical review because it can be associated with a broader metabolic or hormonal issue. Colour alone cannot distinguish these causes.

Wash gently, pat the folds dry, choose breathable clothing, and pause any deodorant or hair-removal product that burns. Do not apply harsh acids, bleach, or abrasive scrubs to the fold. If a rash is present, focus on identifying and calming the inflammation rather than only trying to lighten the colour.

A clinician may assess for Intertrigo or Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation and tailor treatment to the finding. Improvement in colour can lag behind improvement in irritation.

Arrange an appointment if darkening is new and progressive, feels thicker or velvety, affects other skin folds, or persists after you remove likely irritants. Seek prompt care for significant pain, spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling.
