What causes cubital tunnel syndrome?

Short answer
Cubital tunnel syndrome is commonly caused by repeated elbow bending, pressure on the inner elbow, or an ulnar nerve that slips during movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the problem develops
The ulnar nerve passes through a narrow space behind the inner elbow. Leaning on the elbow, sleeping with it tightly bent, or keeping it flexed for long periods can irritate the nerve. Repetitive reaching, lifting, or gripping may add strain. A previous elbow injury, arthritis, swelling, or a change in the nerve's path can reduce room for it. Tingling or numbness often reaches the little and ring fingers; hand weakness or clumsiness can develop when irritation continues.
What may help
Reduce direct pressure on the inner elbow and change tasks that keep the elbow bent. A towel wrap or night splint may help you keep the joint in a more open position while sleeping. Take regular movement breaks during desk work and avoid resting the elbow on a hard armrest. A clinician can check sensation, grip, neck movement, and elbow stability, then suggest exercises or other treatment based on the findings. Do not use a tight brace that increases tingling.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if numbness keeps returning, wakes you at night, or interferes with work or daily tasks. Seek prompt care for new hand weakness, dropping objects, visible muscle wasting, or symptoms after a significant elbow injury. Sudden weakness affecting an arm with facial drooping, speech trouble, or severe dizziness needs emergency help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit ulnar nerve compression, whether the neck or wrist could also be involved, and which activities should be modified. You can also ask how long to try night positioning and what changes would warrant nerve testing or specialist review.

Questions people ask
Can leaning on my elbow cause cubital tunnel syndrome?
Repeated pressure can irritate the ulnar nerve, especially when the elbow is also bent.
Is surgery always needed?
No. Many people first try pressure reduction, activity changes, and night positioning; persistent weakness needs medical review.
