What causes Asherman syndrome?

The uterine lining can heal with bands of scar tissue that join opposite surfaces of the womb. This can reduce the space inside the cavity or affect how the lining responds during the cycle.

It may follow a surgical procedure for miscarriage, treatment of retained pregnancy tissue, or another procedure inside the womb. Infection or inflammation can also contribute. Light or absent periods, pelvic pain around the expected period, difficulty conceiving or repeated pregnancy loss can occur, although symptoms vary.

Tell a gynaecologist about previous uterine procedures, infections, changes in bleeding and pregnancy history. They may recommend an ultrasound, a contrast scan or hysteroscopy, which allows the uterine cavity to be viewed directly.

Treatment may involve hysteroscopic removal of adhesions, followed by a plan to support healing and monitor the uterine lining. Surgical Management of Miscarriage is relevant background when adhesions followed a miscarriage procedure; it does not mean every procedure causes Asherman syndrome.

Arrange assessment for newly absent or markedly lighter periods after a uterine procedure, persistent cyclical pelvic pain, difficulty conceiving or repeated pregnancy loss. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fever, fainting, or heavy bleeding after a procedure.
