What causes actinic cheilitis?

The lip has less protective pigment and a thinner surface barrier than much of the surrounding facial skin. Cumulative sunlight, including ultraviolet light reflected from water, sand, or buildings, can injure its cells. Outdoor work, frequent outdoor recreation, and not protecting the lips can increase exposure. Dryness, cracking, pale or reddish colour, and a blurred border between lip and skin may develop.

Actinic cheilitis is different from a short-lived chapped lip. Persistent roughness deserves an examination because long-term sun damage can sometimes produce more serious changes.

Use a lip product with broad-spectrum sun protection and reapply it during outdoor time, especially after eating or drinking. A wide-brimmed hat and shade reduce direct exposure. Do not peel or repeatedly bite rough skin. A dermatologist may examine the lip closely and discuss prescription treatment, freezing, light-based treatment, or removal of a persistent area when appropriate.

Arrange a medical review for a rough, scaly, cracked, thickened, or pale lip area that does not settle with protection. Seek prompt assessment if one spot bleeds, forms a sore, becomes increasingly painful, develops a lump, or changes noticeably. A clinician may need to sample a persistent area to clarify the diagnosis.
