What causes achilles tendon rupture?

The Achilles tendon joins the calf muscles to the heel and transmits force when you walk, run or jump. A sudden demand, such as sprinting, jumping or changing direction, can exceed the tendon's capacity. Repeated irritation may alter how the tendon tolerates load; Achilles tendinitis is one condition associated with this pathway. Some ruptures occur during an ordinary step when the tendon has already been vulnerable.

Stop activity and avoid pushing off through the injured foot. Keep the ankle still in a comfortable position, avoid stretching the calf, and use crutches or assistance if available rather than walking normally. Arrange urgent medical assessment because treatment decisions depend on the tear and the person's activity needs. Do not massage the area or test it with repeated heel raises. A clinician may examine calf strength and ankle movement and arrange imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Seek urgent care after a sudden snap or pop, immediate pain in the back of the ankle, new swelling or bruising, or difficulty walking and pushing the foot down. Emergency help is needed for a cold or numb foot, severe deformity, or rapidly worsening pain. Prompt assessment helps protect the tendon while the next steps are planned.
