What causes a fishy vaginal odor?

The odour may be stronger after sex or during a period and may occur with thin, greyish or white discharge. Thrush usually causes itching and thicker discharge rather than a fishy smell, while a forgotten tampon can cause a strong unpleasant odour. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

A clinician may ask about discharge, itching, pelvic pain, bleeding, sexual exposure, recent antibiotics and pregnancy before examining you or arranging a swab.

Wash the outside of the vulva gently with water or a mild unscented product, keep the area dry, and avoid douching, scented wipes and deodorants. Do not insert home remedies or use leftover antibiotics, because they may irritate the vagina or treat the wrong condition.
