What can cause vaginal odour?

Vaginal odour can change with the menstrual cycle, sweat, retained products, irritation, or an infection that needs treatment. A mild natural scent is normal; a new, strong, fishy, or unpleasant smell deserves attention when it persists or comes with other symptoms.

Bacterial vaginosis can cause a fishy smell and a thin discharge. Thrush more often causes itching and thick discharge, but symptoms vary. A forgotten tampon, sweat, or scented products can also alter smell or irritate the vulva. Pelvic infections may cause odour alongside pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, or unusual bleeding.

Wash the vulva gently with water or a mild unscented cleanser and keep the area dry. Do not douche or use perfumes, deodorants, or fragranced washes inside the vagina. Change out of damp clothing and avoid guessing with leftover antibiotics. A clinician can examine you and arrange a swab or other tests before choosing treatment.

Arrange an appointment if the odour is new, persistent, or returns after treatment. Seek prompt care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, pain when urinating, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, or pregnancy with unusual discharge. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell.

Ask what infection or irritation could explain the change, whether testing is needed, and whether a sexual partner also needs assessment or treatment.
