What are the treatment options for uterine sarcoma?

Uterine sarcoma is a cancer arising from muscle or connective tissue of the uterus. Different sarcoma types can behave differently, so the pathology report is central to planning. Imaging and examination help show whether disease is confined to the uterus or extends beyond it.

Radical hysterectomy removes the uterus and nearby tissues when an extensive operation is appropriate. Chemotherapy may be used after surgery, before surgery in selected plans, or when cancer has spread. The team balances cancer control with recovery, fertility implications and other health conditions.

Ask for an explanation of the pathology report and whether a specialist sarcoma review is available. Discuss the effect of surgery on fertility, hormones, bladder and bowel function, as well as recovery and support at home.

If chemotherapy is suggested, ask about the treatment schedule, monitoring, infection precautions and medicines for nausea or other side effects. Share all medicines and any plans for pregnancy before treatment begins.

Seek prompt care for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever during chemotherapy, repeated vomiting, breathlessness or sudden leg swelling. These symptoms can signal bleeding, infection, dehydration or a clot and should not wait for a routine visit.
