What are the treatment options for hives?

Hives are raised, itchy welts caused by temporary release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Individual welts often fade and reappear elsewhere, while swelling can affect deeper skin around the lips or eyelids. A clinician may ask about foods, medicines, infections, heat, pressure and other exposures, although a single trigger is not always found.

Oral antihistamines reduce the effect of histamine and are commonly used to control itch and new welts. The choice and dose should follow medical advice, especially for children, pregnancy, older adults or people taking other sedating medicines. Oral corticosteroids may be prescribed briefly for a severe flare; they are not a routine self-treatment.

Arrange medical review when hives keep returning, last beyond a short episode, interfere with sleep, or occur with fever, bruising or painful swelling. A clinician can check for another cause and adjust treatment rather than relying on repeated self-medication.
