What are the treatment options for thymoma?

Thymoma develops in the thymus, an organ behind the breastbone. Scans help show whether the tumour is contained or involves nearby tissues. The surgical team considers whether the whole tumour can be removed safely and whether nearby structures need attention.

Tumour removal surgery may be the main treatment when the thymoma can be removed. Radiotherapy may be offered after surgery when there is concern that tumour cells could remain, or as another approach when surgery is not suitable. The team also considers breathing, heart and lung health, because the thymus sits close to these structures.

Bring scan reports and a current medicine list to appointments. Tell your team about muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, swallowing trouble or breathlessness, because thymoma can occur alongside immune-related conditions. Ask whether a chest surgeon, radiation specialist and neurology team should coordinate your care.

Get urgent medical help for new or worsening breathlessness, inability to swallow, choking, marked muscle weakness, fainting or chest pain. After surgery, contact the team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever or pain that is not controlled by the prescribed plan.
