What are the treatment options for strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by streptococcal bacteria, but sore throats can also have viral causes. A clinician may assess your throat, glands, fever and other symptoms, and may recommend a throat test. Antibiotics can treat bacterial infection and may reduce the chance of spreading it and of certain complications. They do not help a viral sore throat. Rest, fluids, soft foods, warm drinks and suitable pain relief can reduce discomfort while the throat settles.

Arrange a GP Consultation if your sore throat is severe, lasts beyond the expected course, keeps returning or makes swallowing difficult. If Antibiotic Treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and do not share doses with anyone else. Wash your hands, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and stay home when you feel unwell. A pharmacist or clinician can advise which pain relief is suitable for your age, health conditions and other medicines.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop a muffled voice, or cannot open your mouth normally. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe weakness or dehydration. These symptoms can signal an airway problem or a deeper infection and need immediate assessment.

Ask whether a throat test is needed, whether antibiotics are appropriate, how to manage pain safely, and when you can return to work or school. Ask what warning signs should lead you to seek reassessment.
