What are the treatment options for shoulder dislocation?

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the shoulder socket. Nearby ligaments, muscles, nerves or bones can also be injured, so an examination and imaging may be needed. The joint should not be forced back into place at home.

Afterward, a sling may protect the joint for a clinician-advised period while gentle movement is introduced. Treat a suspected dislocation as urgent, especially if the shoulder looks out of place, movement is severely limited or pain is intense. Get emergency help for a pale, blue, cold or numb hand, worsening weakness, heavy bleeding or an associated major injury. Do not attempt a self-reduction.
