What are the treatment options for scalp psoriasis?

Thick scale can make it difficult for medicine to reach the scalp skin. A clinician may first recommend a product that loosens scale, followed by treatment aimed at reducing inflammation. Medicated shampoos can help control scale and irritation, while topical corticosteroids are often selected for inflamed, itchy areas for a limited course.

Excimer laser therapy delivers targeted light to selected plaques and may be considered when suitable areas remain troublesome. Treatment choice depends on the extent of psoriasis, hair coverage, skin sensitivity and whether psoriasis affects other sites.

Use prescribed scalp products exactly as directed and allow shampoo or treatment to contact the scalp for the recommended time before rinsing. Loosen scale gently; picking or forceful scraping can cause bleeding and worsen plaques. Tell the clinician about hair dye, scalp wounds, eye sensitivity and any medicines you use.

If symptoms extend beyond the scalp or joints become stiff and painful, mention this during review because the treatment plan may need to cover more than the scalp.
