What are the treatment options for ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. It can cause an itchy, scaly, expanding rash, although appearance varies by body site. A clinician may diagnose it from the pattern or take a skin sample when eczema, psoriasis, or another rash could look similar.

Topical antifungal treatment is applied directly to affected skin and is often considered when the area is limited. Oral antifungal treatment reaches infection through the bloodstream and may be selected for scalp or nail involvement, widespread disease, or inadequate response to topical medicine. The medicine and duration depend on the site and diagnosis.

Use the prescribed antifungal for the full instructed course, even if itching improves early. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after applying medicine, and do not share towels, clothing, hairbrushes, or sports equipment. Wash fabrics that touch the rash and ask about checking household pets if exposure is possible. Avoid steroid cream unless a clinician specifically recommends it, as it can mask fungal activity.

Arrange review if the rash is on the scalp or nails, covers several areas, keeps spreading, or does not improve with the recommended treatment. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, eye involvement, pus, fever, or a painful rapidly worsening rash. Children, people with reduced immunity, and people with diabetes may need earlier assessment.
