What are the treatment options for pustular psoriasis?

Pustular psoriasis causes pus-filled spots on inflamed skin and can affect a small area or much of the body. Generalised flares can disturb temperature control and fluid balance, so the treatment plan depends on the pattern, speed of onset, skin area involved, and your overall health. A dermatologist may also check whether an infection, medicine change, or another trigger is contributing.

Biologic medicines target specific immune signals and may be considered when disease is extensive, recurrent, or difficult to control. Methotrexate changes immune activity and may be used when a systemic option is appropriate. Neither option should be started, stopped, or adjusted without medical supervision.

Arrange a dermatology assessment promptly, especially if pustules are spreading. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, note when the flare began, and mention recent infections or treatment changes. Use gentle cleansing, avoid picking or squeezing pustules, and apply only recommended moisturisers or dressings. Your clinician may arrange blood tests or other monitoring before and during systemic treatment.

Seek urgent medical care for widespread pustules with fever, chills, marked weakness, dizziness, dehydration, rapid skin change, or severe pain.
