What are the treatment options for pseudogout?

Short answer

Pseudogout treatment may involve anti-inflammatory medication, joint aspiration, a cortisone injection, and measures that protect movement during a flare.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

During a flare
Treatment focuses on inflammation, pain and joint movement

Infection should be considered and assessed

What the options do

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, can cause sudden joint pain, warmth, swelling and restricted movement. Because infection and other causes can look similar, assessment may include examination and testing fluid from the joint. Anti-inflammatory medication can reduce the inflammatory response, but the suitable choice depends on your kidney, stomach, heart and bleeding risks and on medicines you already take.

Joint aspiration removes some fluid from a swollen joint. It can ease pressure and allows the fluid to be examined. A cortisone injection may be discussed after infection has been considered, particularly when inflammation is concentrated in one joint. These treatments address the flare; a clinician can also review contributing health factors and ways to protect joint function.

What you can do during a flare

Rest the painful joint from strenuous loading, but avoid keeping it completely still for longer than advised. Elevate the limb when practical and use a cool pack with a cloth barrier for short periods if that feels soothing. Do not start, stop or combine anti-inflammatory medicines without checking the instructions, especially if you have kidney disease, ulcers, blood-thinning treatment or other chronic conditions. Keep follow-up if attacks recur.

When urgent assessment matters

A hot, swollen joint with fever, chills, severe pain, confusion or feeling acutely unwell needs prompt medical assessment because joint infection requires different treatment. Seek care when you cannot use the joint, swelling is rapidly increasing or the diagnosis has not been confirmed. Contact your clinician if symptoms are not settling or return after treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Does the joint fluid need testing? Which anti-inflammatory option fits my medical history? Would aspiration or a cortisone injection be appropriate? How should I manage medicines during a future flare?

Questions people ask

Does joint aspiration diagnose pseudogout?

Testing aspirated joint fluid can help identify calcium pyrophosphate crystals and distinguish pseudogout from infection or other causes.

Can I take anti-inflammatory medicine on my own?

Check with a clinician or pharmacist first, particularly with kidney, stomach, heart or bleeding conditions or other medicines.
