What are the treatment options for placenta praevia?

Placenta praevia means the placenta is low in the womb and may cover or approach the cervix. Its position can change as the womb grows, so follow-up imaging helps the team decide whether vaginal birth is appropriate. A Growth Scan may also check the baby's growth when the maternity team considers that useful. The plan takes account of bleeding, contractions, placental position and the baby's wellbeing.

If there is no bleeding, your maternity team may arrange repeat scans and give specific advice about activity, sex or examinations. Any restriction should be individualised. Bleeding may require assessment in hospital, observation, treatment for anaemia or corticosteroids when early birth is a concern. If the placenta still blocks the birth passage, a planned Caesarean Section is generally used. Your team will discuss timing and what to expect if labour or bleeding begins earlier.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for any vaginal bleeding in pregnancy, especially bright-red bleeding, bleeding with pain or contractions, dizziness, fainting or reduced baby movements. Use emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse or severe weakness. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina until a clinician has advised you.

Ask where the placenta is in relation to the cervix, when the next scan is needed, whether a Caesarean Section is recommended, what to do if bleeding starts, and when hospital admission or steroid treatment might be considered.
