What are the treatment options for perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis causes small inflamed bumps, redness, or scaling around the mouth and sometimes around the nose or eyes. A clinician may review steroid creams, heavy cosmetics, toothpaste, and other products because some exposures can maintain the irritation. The rash can resemble acne or eczema, so an examination helps select the right approach.

Topical antibiotic therapy is applied to affected skin and may be suitable when the area is limited. Oral antibiotics can be considered when inflammation is more widespread or does not settle with topical care. These medicines require clinical guidance, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have antibiotic allergies.

Use a gentle cleanser and a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser if your skin feels dry. Pause scrubs, exfoliating acids, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams while the rash is active. Do not restart a steroid cream on the face without medical advice; stopping suddenly after frequent use may also need guidance.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash persists, spreads, or returns. Take a list of products and medicines used on your face, including any steroid cream, because this can change the plan. Follow the prescribed course as directed and avoid sharing antibiotics.

Seek prompt medical advice if swelling affects the eyes or lips, the skin becomes very painful, blisters or pus appear, or you develop fever. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or rapidly developing facial swelling. A rash near the eyes also deserves timely assessment because several conditions can look similar there.
