What are the treatment options for osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma is a bone cancer, so planning considers the bone involved, the tumour's relationship to nearby nerves and blood vessels, and whether disease is present elsewhere. Imaging and tissue diagnosis help the specialist team define the operation and treatment plan.

Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to treat cancer cells throughout the body and after surgery to address remaining microscopic disease. Surgery removes the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue when possible. Limb-sparing surgery may use reconstruction, while amputation is considered when safe removal cannot preserve a useful limb. Lung or other site surgery may be discussed when spread is limited and removable.

Ask the sarcoma team to explain the planned sequence, biopsy findings, scans and treatment goals. Before an operation, discuss reconstruction, expected movement, wound care and rehabilitation. During chemotherapy, report fever, unusual bruising, breathing problems, severe vomiting or inability to drink promptly.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy can support strength, mobility and independence after surgery. Emotional support, school or work planning and help with practical arrangements are also reasonable parts of a comprehensive care plan.

Contact the treatment team urgently for fever during chemotherapy, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, uncontrolled pain, a rapidly enlarging swelling, or new weakness or numbness near the tumour. After surgery, seek prompt advice for wound redness, drainage, separation, severe swelling or a cold or unusually pale limb.
