What are the treatment options for oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid around the baby than expected. Fluid levels can change during pregnancy, so an ultrasound assessment is interpreted alongside gestational age, growth, blood flow, fetal movement, and other findings. A Growth Scan can check growth and fluid while clinicians look for a possible cause, such as fluid loss, placental concerns, or a problem affecting the baby’s kidneys or urinary tract.

Your maternity team may arrange repeated ultrasound checks, monitor the baby’s heart rate and movements, and review your blood pressure and general health. If dehydration is contributing, fluids may be advised. A medicine or procedure may be considered when a specific cause is found. If the pregnancy is far enough along, or monitoring suggests that birth is safer, the team may discuss Induction of Labour. The timing and method depend on the findings rather than fluid level alone.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, painful regular contractions, fever, severe abdominal pain, or a clear reduction in your baby’s movements. Do not wait for a routine scan if movements feel different. A sudden gush or ongoing wetness can indicate that the membranes have ruptured and needs assessment.
