What are the treatment options for molluscum contagiosum?

The virus can spread through direct skin contact, shared towels or scratching, and bumps may appear in crops rather than all at once. Eczema around the lesions can increase irritation and scratching. Children commonly have lesions on the trunk or limbs, while adults may have genital or lower-abdominal lesions that need sensitive assessment. A clinician can distinguish molluscum from warts, folliculitis and other bumps before choosing treatment.

Keep lesions clean, avoid scratching and cover bumps when practical during close contact or activities involving shared equipment. Do not squeeze, cut or scrape them at home. Avoid sharing towels, razors and clothing that rub the area, and manage dry itchy skin with suitable moisturiser. If cryotherapy or curettage and cautery is performed, follow wound-care instructions and expect the treated area to need time to settle. Ask about covering lesions during swimming or contact sports.

Arrange a review if lesions are near the eye, numerous, painful, heavily inflamed, infected-looking or located on the genitals. Seek prompt care for spreading warmth, pus, fever or rapidly worsening pain. People with reduced immune function may need earlier assessment. After treatment, contact the clinic if bleeding persists, a wound opens or redness and swelling continue to increase.

Ask whether observation is suitable, how to protect household contacts, which lesions should be treated first and what marks or irritation to expect. If a procedure is recommended, ask about pain control, wound care and signs of infection.
