What are the treatment options for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma develops in a thin lining, most often around the lungs, although other sites can be involved. Doctors consider the location, tissue type, stage, breathing symptoms, and general health when building a plan. A specialist team may combine treatments or change the plan as the disease responds.

Chemotherapy uses medicines that travel through the bloodstream to act on cancer cells. Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise cancer. Surgery or local radiation may be suitable for selected people when the disease is confined enough and the expected benefit outweighs the burden. Palliative care can be introduced at any stage to ease breathlessness, pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other concerns.

Ask for an explanation of the biopsy and scan findings, the aim of each proposed treatment, and how breathing function affects eligibility. Tell the team about oxygen use, chest pain, weight change, medicines, and daily activities. A symptom plan may include drainage of fluid around the lung, pain control, breathing support, nutrition advice, and emotional support when needed.

Consider bringing a trusted person to appointments and writing down treatment dates and side effects. Contact the team early if eating, sleeping, walking, or breathing becomes harder; adjustments can often be discussed before symptoms become severe.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, sudden chest pain, coughing a large amount of blood, fainting, or new confusion. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, worsening cough, increasing chest swelling, uncontrolled pain, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms require assessment and may have treatment-related or non-cancer causes.
